Interview with Sachika

Behind the clothing line Sachika are the identical twins To-Tam and To-Nya. The Vietnamese twins were born in Paris, grew up in Montreal, and a few years ago they moved to New York to build their fashion brand. They have already achieved a lot with their feminine and flirty clothing line. Sachika has been featured in many magazines and the twins have dressed stars such as Nicki Minaj.

The inspiration for their spring 2012 collection was Mermaid Paradise: beautiful mermaids that come to life on the Island of Sachika.

I asked the Sachika twins some questions after their show to find out more about the collection and Sachika:

Q: How did your inspiration for the collection come about?
To-Tam: A long time ago as part of a school project. She (To-Nya) had this idea ten years ago for a school project that she never actually did. So we decided to take on that project and do a whole collection based on Mermaid Paradise, flowy, flirty and dreamy.

Q: How does the collection represent your aesthetic as designers?
To-Tam: I think it’s very representative of who we are.
To-Nya: We design for modern women. She’s smart, she’s independent, she knows what she wants. She’s also embracing her femininity. All the pieces are a celebration of the female body

Q: Do you have a favourite piece in the collection?
To-Nya: I have a couple. I like the Inessa dress, the blueberry gown with the high split and cut outs.

Q: What is it like working together as sisters on the line?
To-Tam: It’s fantastic. We really complement each other. We understand each other but at the same time we’re very different. To-Nya is the designer and I take care of the branding and the business.
To-Nya: We’re definitely like yin and yang. Opposites attract.
